Last month I went to visit America for a couple weeks and I recorded the entire trip on the Twitter. Here are all my tweets, from the minute my vacation began to when I got back home. Sorry they’re in reverse order – I can’t find a tool that will export them from first to last – so just jump to the bottom and work your way up to read them all.

2010-01-26 08:33:22
natges: I’ve arrived home. It sure would have been nice if I’d been
informed of the scaffolding and construction on my building.

2010-01-26 08:05:49
natges: Cab driver is listening to radio in Russian. All I want to hear is
Hebrew!

2010-01-26 08:00:47
natges: I made it through Customs with no trouble and I’m in a NIS 135 taxi
to Tel Aviv.

2010-01-26 07:25:10
natges: I’m on the ground in Israel!

2010-01-25 20:50:55
natges: @huangm777 they just paged a “passenger Mike Huang” on my flight.
Visiting Israel?

2010-01-25 20:30:05
natges: Aside from them, the flight is not close to full. Awesome!

2010-01-25 20:29:02
natges: There’s a Xtian tour group on my plane. I love their enthusiasm!

2010-01-25 20:20:07
natges: Goodbye America! I won’t take off for a while, but I’m done with
you for now.

2010-01-25 20:18:53
natges: I’m on the plane – Continental CO84. Who wants to pick me up at the
airport?

2010-01-25 17:22:12
natges: There’s nothing like some awful airport food to make me crave
airplane food.

2010-01-25 17:20:54
natges: @elliotreed no direct flights from any DC airport to Israel; I like
Continental’s 777s.

2010-01-25 16:36:08
natges: Just kidding. Atlanta to Newark is cancelled. Newark to Israel is
on time. It’s all one flight number.

2010-01-25 16:21:10
natges: The board says my flight is cancelled. http://twitpic.com/zprtl

But the people say it’s on time.

2010-01-25 16:07:29
natges: It’s outrageous that both Reagan and Liberty have Dunkin’ Donuts
instead of Krispy Kreme.

2010-01-25 15:59:58
natges: Hurry up and wait! Now I have to find a way to burn some time.

2010-01-25 15:53:13
natges: Letting me transfer from domestic to international terminals with
my shoes on is about the most I can ask from an American airport.

2010-01-25 15:26:07
natges: @fadetheory maybe I should look into getting a child…

2010-01-25 15:25:20
natges: I’m on the ground at Liberty. That’s the airport formerly known as
Newark, for those who don’t know.

2010-01-25 13:41:33
natges: Thank you @fadetheory!

2010-01-25 13:40:54
natges: My flight to Liberty is delayed due to an electrical problem on
board. I don’t like the sound of that.

2010-01-25 13:09:59
natges: I’m now waiting at Reagan to board a plane to Liberty.

2010-01-25 13:08:14
natges: I wasn’t spared the normal indignities of American airport
security.

2010-01-25 13:07:09
natges: I did some hardcore luggage adjusting at check-in and each bag was
exactly 50 pounds.

2010-01-25 11:53:34
natges: I think all the people missing from the Metro last night are on
the Beltway this morning.

2010-01-25 06:18:31
natges: Did Infinite Jest REALLY have to be that long? I won’t know for a
while, because it’s getting left behind. Sorry DFW.

2010-01-25 06:17:41
natges: Preliminary weigh-in results: first bag is six pounds overweight,
second bag is half a pound overweight. Time to toss some books.

2010-01-25 06:06:55
natges: Natan is packing to go home.: is packing to go home.
http://bit.ly/8MCU9R (via the Facebook)

2010-01-25 05:52:37
natges: Good thing my parents have Code Red!

2010-01-25 05:52:21
natges: That’s an hour earlier than I’d anticipated. It’s now almost 1 am
and I still have a lot of packing and arranging to get done.

2010-01-25 05:51:57
natges: Continental called to let us know that my flight to Newark is
cancelled. I got on an earlier flight. I’m leaving the house at 6:30 am.

2010-01-25 04:05:13
natges: Alex B. and Craig live in a building called The Gatsby.

2010-01-25 02:42:40
natges: I’m at Open City cafe with Katy and Craig!

2010-01-25 01:19:31
natges: The Metro is almost empty at 8 pm on a Sunday.

2010-01-24 23:12:45
natges: Last supper: Red, Hot & Blue.

2010-01-24 23:11:55
natges: I am mostly packed.

2010-01-24 22:33:49
natges: @xgess the bathroom is free, so you can take a bath if you want
now. Then a shower. Then you’ll be clean.

2010-01-24 22:32:44
natges: So sorry I missed my cousins Cindy, Brian, Stevie & Avery on this
trip, and friends Kenny & Yvonne. Next year – or sooner?

2010-01-24 22:32:08
natges: My parents had a wonderful gathering so I could see a lot of
people. It was so terrific to see everyone and I expect visitors in Israel!

2010-01-24 19:08:20
natges: Is it just me or are there a lot of vets / animal hospitals in
Montgomery County?

2010-01-24 18:18:11
natges: Last supermarket run is underway.

2010-01-24 17:31:02
natges: Clean!

2010-01-24 17:30:28
natges: @MemphisSeth they killed off some attractive looking females in
season two – what about them?

2010-01-24 17:29:28
natges: @vboykis 21 emails left is not bad for any day.

2010-01-24 17:18:47
natges: ps. Now I’m showering so I can actually get clean.

2010-01-23 22:44:35
natges: It’s been a very, very, very long time since I went to a
conservative synagogue on shabbat. This morning’s experience was quite
church-like.

2010-01-23 22:43:37
natges: @MemphisSeth her character is the worst on the whole show.

2010-01-23 17:40:33
natges: My brother and I are on the way to Chipotle for visit #4.

2010-01-23 17:38:47
natges: Of all the things I don’t have in my life, the one I miss the least
is radio.

2010-01-23 14:30:10
natges: I’m going to a bat mitzvah. This is the first time I’m wearing a
suit and tie since 2005.

2010-01-23 11:37:46
natges: @simonepress great interview with Snooki. I can not wait to watch
the rest of the season.

2010-01-23 01:49:55
natges: The Patagonia Critical Mass messenger-style bag I ordered is, alas,
too big for me. I think I’ll have to ask my parents to return it.

2010-01-23 01:49:06
natges: @lettersapp Many congratulations on beginning the sorely needed
project. And where/how can I volunteer to help???

2010-01-23 00:04:40
natges: The best thing about Tripper Bus, by the way, is that I don’t have
to set foot in The District.

2010-01-22 23:15:02
natges: We made great time on the bus (considerig rush hour) and now I’m on
the Metro back to my parents’.

2010-01-22 22:59:18

2010-01-22 19:08:22
natges: We have another impeccably polite Tripper driver and mostly empty
bus – I did have a bit of a scare when my outlet didn’t work at first…

2010-01-22 19:07:39
natges: Thanks for the hospitality: Leeor and Marie, Karen and Akilesh,
Adam and John.

2010-01-22 19:07:08
natges: I’m on the Tripper Bus back to Maryland. This was an unbelievably
awesome trip to New York, perfect in almost EVERY way.

2010-01-22 16:57:58
natges: Last meal in New York = first time trying Korean. Sorry Sharav!

2010-01-22 16:57:18
natges: There are more password protected networks every year in New York.
Fortunately I can usually find one called linksys.

2010-01-22 16:56:18
natges: RT @fmanjoo: That’s it, I’m not voting anymore. What’s the point? I
should really get into sports or something.

2010-01-22 16:09:36
natges: Places I regret that I’ll not have visited on this trip: Shake
Shack, Di Fara’s.

natges: Most ridiculous flyer on the board at Think Coffee: Holistic Pet
Healer.

2010-01-22 16:06:06
natges: Seriously, Think Coffee should just install some Israeli shaped
electrical outlets for all their Israeli customers.

2010-01-22 15:57:45
natges: I haven’t heard so much Hebrew on this trip to New York‚Ķ but
Israelis seem to have taken over Think Coffee on Bleecker.

2010-01-22 15:56:13
natges: Imagine THIS sign on a cash register in Israel:

natges: You know what the plural of “anecdote” is? DATA! (a joke by Bernard
Tenenbaum, told by Karen)

2010-01-22 00:30:51

2010-01-20 16:25:07
natges: I think I’m using more chapstick on this trip to New York than in
any other time period of comparable lengh ever.

2010-01-20 14:43:57
natges: … and I’m now in Apple of Midtown where I’m planning out my day.

2010-01-20 14:43:32
natges: I had a bagel this morning from Bagel Hole in Park Slope. It was a
little on the chewy side for my taste, but still excellent.

2010-01-19 23:41:36

Did you know that there’s a film adaptation of The Little Prince? Neither did I, until I randomly downloaded it and watched it today.

Here is my judgment on it: everything about it is splendidly perfect except for the kid’s hair. His hair is really, really bad. It is 80s rock star bad. Even worse, it’s Rod Stewart bad. There might need to be a new category to describe this actor’s hair: 70s child star bad.

Also, the movie is actually a musical. Somehow a major movie studio took one of the most touching and poignant books written in the 20th century and filled it with corny song and dance, and still didn’t manage to ruin it. But I should point out that it is kind of dizzying how they spin around so much. And it could stand to be a hell of a lot shorter, but is stretched out impossibly by five or ten minutes at a time of useless frolicking as they sing another pointless song. But yeah, check it out.

The Macintosh computer is 25 years old, and in its honor I want to share my memories of the different Macs I’ve used.

Way back in the 1980s, I was in elementary school and my family’s computer was a Mac Plus. The Mac Plus was a hell of a machine for its day, though I didn’t know it at the time, since my main concern was playing very crude games, making birthday cards for people with a program called Print Shop, and word-processing in Microsoft Word while all of my friends were still using WordPerfect.

Approximately corresponding to my middle school years, we had an LC-II. When I looked it up today, I learned that the LCs were Apple’s low-end consumer Macs and that they were the exact same thing as the Performa line. The funny thing is that we had Performas in school and I hated them, though I never had any negative feelings about the LC at home. This was also the era when Apple had a whole confusing variety of lines like the Quadras, Performas and Centres (Centrises?), which I barely remember.

As I started high school, I got a reconditioned LC 475 for word processing. Around that time, we got an actual Mac clone. If memory serves me correctly, it was a Umax SuperMac, and it was very noisy. This was the computer I mainly used for going on AOL, reading and responding to emails, and participating in chat rooms. We of course had a 14.4 Kbs modem, though later we got a lightning fast 28.8 Kbs model to replace it. It was on this computer that I first surfed the web (and made my first web page).

When I went to college in 1999, it was with a new iMac (my brother had gotten an iMac a year earlier when they first shipped). I don’t remember all the specs, but I am positive it had a six gb hard drive and perhaps a 350 or 366 mHz processor. The iMac was a good computer for sure, but it didn’t have a CD-R drive or a DVD player, two essentials for the day. It also didn’t have enough RAM to run OS X when it came out in about 2001, which meant I spent 2002-2004 using a pre-modern operating system and still didn’t even have a way to watch a DVD.

Then in 2004, when I was preparing to move to Israel, I got a PowerBook. I’m still using it today, so I’m sure I can describe it accurately. 15″ screen, SuperDrive (CD-RW and DVD), 80 gig hard drive, 1 GB RAM, 1.25 mHz processor. Back in the day, this was a pretty serious computer. Today, it is not. Though I’ve managed to stay up to date in terms of operating systems, I will not be able to run the next version of OS X, Snow Leopard. My PowerBook is too slow to run the latest MS Office suite, let alone something like Photoshop or Aperture. I don’t have enough space on my hard drive to store my music collection or my photos, so I have to keep both my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on an external hard drive. Firefox usually takes several minutes to load. I commonly read articles and respond to emails on my iPhone instead of my computer because of the time it takes to load a web page or an email.

What will my next computer be? I’ve thought seriously about getting another iMac or perhaps a Mac Mini (or two) with the intention of using them for less than five years. I’ve also thought about a low-end laptop. But most likely I will end up getting a MacBook Pro 15″, basically the up-to-date version of my current PowerBook. Since I can’t afford it now, it will have to wait a while – probably at least until Snow Leopard, which is expected this year.

By the way, I also currently have a Mac Plus, just like the one my family had all those years ago; an iMac that’s one generation newer than the one I took to college; a third generation iPod with 20 gigs that I use as a handy portable hard drive; a new silver fifth generation iPod with 160 gigs; a 2G iPhone; an AirPort Express and an AirPort Extreme. That is a boat load of Apple paraphernalia.

I suppose the craziest thing about looking back upon 25 years of Mac history is the amazing extent to which Macs, and Apple products in general, are now everywhere. There was a time when I was pretty much the only Mac user I knew. Sure, a family down the street also had Macs (I think they had a Mac Classic when we had the Mac Plus), but I don’t remember knowing even one other Mac user when I was in high school. In college, I worked during my freshman year for a stock photography company that used Macs, and there was a girl on my floor who had a G3 tower – she was into art and design – but that’s pretty much it. Fast forward nine years, and suddenly everyone seems to have a Mac. Friends of mine who used to taunt me and tease me for having a Mac are calling me with questions about Mac software. My roommate has a Mac. A fellow dog-owner in my neighborhood got a Mac from her Australian cousin and I showed her how to use it. At my last job, my boss used a Mac at home.

It’s hard to say for sure, but it looks like Apple has decisively turned the corner from when the company had a 1-2% market share. Apple and Mac have firmly entered the public consciousness, even in a place like Israel, where the president’s son’s company owns the rights to deal Apples exclusively in Israel (note: most Israelis still have never used a Mac or even seen one in person, and at my previous job, my manager asked me: Is the company called Mac and the product Apple, or is it the other way around?).

Unfortunately, getting a lot of Macs into a lot of people’s hands means that quality has suffered. I’m referring specifically to hardware quality, and while I don’t have any real proof that this is so, my experience troubleshooting my friends’ problems and my own indicates that people who buy MacBooks and MacBook Pros simply have more hardware issues with them than the people who used to buy iBooks and PowerBooks. I hope Apple does not let QA slide any further than it has.

I don’t know what kind of computer I’m going to be using in 25 years. I could promise to stick with Mac forever and ever – but if Apple in the 2030s is like the IBM or Microsoft of decades past and present, I’ll probably be using something else. Of course, since we’re only six years away from cars that fly and hoverboards, microwaves that hydrate food and enlarge it to edible size, and engines powered on common garbage, who’s to say the computers of tomorrow won’t be implanted in our brains or our fingertips? I can’t wait…

The Prestige is not a bad movie. But it is boring. It’s not even boring in a good way, like Jim Jarmusch’s movies, which have to keep a slow pace because they’re serious. It’s boring in a bad way, like a talented author’s first novel that he planned to write for a decade and falls far short of his aspirations. If you like magic tricks, by all means, this movie is for you. If you like the “mindfuck genre” of complex, twisted plots, you will be able at least to tolerate it, like I did. Otherwise, find something else to watch.

I’m not sure why, but there’s something special about movies that start with “American.” In my own cinema library, they include: American Beauty, an awesome movie; American History X, an awesome movie; American Psycho, an awesome movie; and American Splendor, which would be a pretty good movie if I had any tolerance for comic books.

Add to that list: American Gangster, a movie I just watched that is very awesome. The technical aspects of it were just right: sets, cinematography, soundtrack, etc. The casting wasn’t bad, except I wasn’t thrilled with Russell Crowe or the actress who played Frank Lucas’ wife. Denzel Washington really under-acted his role, in my opinion. I can’t decide if I like this or not. On one hand, in a movie about a gangster I want to see a performance that can remind me of Marlon Brando. On the other hand, that’s a bit silly and maybe he’s just trying to avoid anything that will make people think of Brando.

Anyway, the story is about a black gangster in Harlem who imports heroin from southeast Asia, and the clean New Jersey cop who tries to take down his operation. The plot and writing were excellent. It was rather long (I watched the unrated version). There was some unrealistic violence (Lucas executed a rival drug dealer at point-blank range and with awfully little blood spatter) and some some good fight scenes (eg, the drug raid conducted with shotguns). The whole rise-fall-redemption aspect is kind of stale, but at least they didn’t cheapen it too much with any excess psychoanalysis.

If you haven’t seen American Gangster, you should watch it without further delay.

If you’re a football fan, like I am 16 times a year, you might share a special appreciation for a breakaway run. Watch the quarterback hand the ball off to a running back, and watch him shoot like a rocket toward the line, twist and turn, jump and duck, maneuver, fade, feign, and then run for daylight – that’s bliss. It doesn’t matter who the guy is or what color jersey he wears (with one exception): if he can run the ball with skill and grace, I will get up and cheer for him.

The Express is a biopic about a football star named Ernie Davis, who was totally unfamiliar to me before I watched the movie because he never played in the NFL and because he died nearly 30 years before I ever seriously watched a football game. I can’t say it’s a good movie, because it pretty much isn’t (it’s not bad either). What I can say is that the football scenes are choreographed well. In fact, they’re choreographed well enough that I almost got up and cheered multiple times. Also, several times I loudly exclaimed, “Damn!” in praise of some skilled jumping over linebackers.

If you like football, or like someone who likes football, this movie might be worth watching.

I recently watched the Beowulf movie. What, you didn’t know there was a Beowulf movie? Don’t worry, I didn’t know either until I realized it was part of a large group of movies that I copied from a friend’s external hard drive (thanks, Itai).

Before I go any further, I just want to get this out there – the movie is not exactly like the Beowulf story that you know from high school if you were born before 1965. If you were born after 1965, like I was, you probably know nothing or virtually nothing about Beowulf, as I didn’t before watching the movie and then reading about it in Wikipedia. So right, there are differences between the movie and the classic tale. That might bother you, but it doesn’t really bother me since I’ve never read it and I have no plans to do so.

Speaking of the story, it’s pretty good. I guess it pretty much covers all the bases that have to be covered in an epic for it to become part of the literary canon. But that’s not the reason to watch the movie. You should watch the movie because the computer graphics are amazing. Maybe I didn’t realize because I’ve willfully avoided video games and cartoons for my entire adult life, but computer imaging has really advanced so much that it can blow you away if you’re an old man of 27 like I am. Apparently they used actual actors playing out the parts and then computers to fill in the gaps. Or something like that. I don’t know, but I was really impressed.

I wasn’t alive when Kennedy was shot, and I wasn’t present when Rabin was shot. I’ve never been in the neighborhood when aliens abducted a redneck, a yeti was tracked or Elvis was sighted, all to my great disappointment – at my inability to proffer firsthand eyewitness evidence in direct contradiction of the lunatic conspiracy theories that drive me up the wall.

But I have witnessed at least one major historical event with my own eyes and now is the time to give thanks for my good sense in taking photographs and writing down everything that happened.

We’re a couple months shy of the fifth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York, and the 9/11 Denial Movement is born. I knew it was only a matter of time, I knew it in September 2001 and even remember telling people my prediction that, some day, people would deny what I saw with my own eyes.

In the past few months I have had to answer charges – mostly by Israelis who are too stupid to realize, or too lazy to figure out, that Michael Moore has the equivalent credibility of Uri Avnery – that the World Trade Center’s twin towers actually imploded. The “evidence” is that the buildings fell straight down, which may be apparent from a video recording made that day but which is nonetheless totally untrue.

Here is the Chronicle of Higher Education examining the 9/11 Denial Movement (with a very strong unspoken argument against tenure) reciting some of the “evidence” cited by a group of “scholars” for why they believe two packed airliners loaded with jet fuel for a cross-continental journey couldn’t have brought down the buildings:

Like many others in the movement, Mr. Jones sees a number of “red flags” in the way the buildings fell. Why did the towers collapse at speeds close to the rate of free fall? Why did they fall straight down, instead of toppling over? Why did World Trade Center 7, a 47-story high-rise that was never hit by a plane, suddenly collapse in the same fashion – fast and straight down – on the evening of September 11? [emphasis added]

And here is me, writing on the afternoon of 11 September 2001 (edits and parenthetical comments came a little bit later, and I dated my account the following day):

Eventually I ended up fairly close to the World Trade Center … and I had a very clear view of both towers burning. The holes were huge, black, gaping and open. The whole sky near the towers was glittering as pieces of metal on the outside of the buildings melted and flaked off, fluttering to the ground … the smoke billowed out and wrapped around one tower, engulfing the other.

I stood there for a while, taking pictures…

Then the first tower collapsed. The top of it sort of moved to the side, lilted, and then tipped right at us and fell in our direction, crumbling to the ground. We all watched it, gaping, insane, as the smoke and dust cloud rose and then started advancing on us. The sound was exactly like the roar of a jet, we couldn’t hear anything else for a few seconds. It was so much like a movie, so graphic and vivid – I think I heard myself screaming, but it could have been someone near me. Our screams sounded like animals …” [emphasis added]

lilt: to move with lightness and buoyancy

I refute the charge that the buildings fell “straight down, instead of toppling over.”

I don’t know what it says in the government’s report, but there might be errors in it; I don’t know what it says in Michael Moore’s movie, but there might be truth in it. What I do know is that I was standing there and that I remember what happened, but my memory doesn’t even matter because my testimony was finalized in the immediate aftermath. So I’d like to see anyone come to me and look me in the eye and tell me that I’m not only remembering falsely but that I viewed it incorrectly and wrote the wrong thing hours after viewing it.

For what it’s worth, I don’t know what “free-fall” speed is, but I also remember and would be happy to testify in the way of further refutation that the first tower seemed actually to take a very long time to fall, and I even tried to achieve this effect in my writing, at the point in my account where the first tower fell, which I originally sent out as an email and which was forwarded around the world and back to me a hundred times.

The 9/11 Denial Movement, like other conspiracy theories, is a creation of, and reflection on, modernity, and more accurately modernization. All their reports, conferences, slogans, DVDs, insinuations and allegations and innuendo will always say more about them as creatures of this society than about any specific event. But they are going to have to do a hell of a lot better than this if they want to pull a fast one over on us. I was there and I saw it. They are wrong.
